Pulleys
A pulley is a simple machine that uses a wheel with a groove in it and where a rope or chain moves inside the groove.
Pulley's are used to lift heavy objects or objects that need to be moved at much higher levels. Using pulleys uses less energy than trying to lift the object off the ground.
Example: Flags - when you raise a flag, you pull down on the rope on one side of the pulley and the other side has the flag attached, so the flag goes up.
Flag poles use pulleys to lift the flag up the pole.

Water wells use pulleys to lower the bucket and scoop up water. The pulley helps lift the heavy bucket of water.
A zip line uses pulleys to help people travel over the tree tops.
Machines that build roadways, buildings, and bridges use pulleys to lift heavy objects.
